Be a Trail Ranger!

Between Stanton Road and Pomeroy Road WABA is hiring three interns to work on D.C.’s trails for the summer through our trail ranger program. Yes, the job requires time spent on the embattled Metropolitan Branch Trail, but it’s not limited to that. Other trails in the city—Suitland Parkway, Anacostia Riverwalk, and Marvin Gaye—require the attention of trail rangers for outreach, communication, and data collection. We’ve partnered with the Student Conservation Association to hire trail ranger interns. If you’re not part of SCA but interested in working the trail ranger program, the group will work with us to get your application through. We’re seeking a diverse, talented pool of applicants from which to select rangers. Read the posting below and go through SCA to apply.   • Ride a bicycle daily on the District of Columbia’s trails pulling a lightweight trailer with supplies including first aid kits, maps and bike patch kits.
  • Report large trail maintenance issues to DC311 app
  • Report safety issues to MPD.
  • Check in daily with manager to receive schedule and assignments and weekly meetings with Urban Forestry Administration staff.
  • Help coordinate and staff volunteer trail clean up days with the assistance of manager.
  • Hand out supplies and information to assist trail users (maps, patch kits, etc.)
  • Assist in minor trail cleanup activities, such as sweeping broken glass or posting notices of hazardous trail conditions.
  • Create and establish a reliable feedback mechanism for trail users to submit concerns and issues.
Ideal candidate traits:•    The ability to ride a bike daily throughout the city pulling a lightweight bike trailer.•    A solid understanding of the principles of bicycling safety and traffic law.•    A commitment to being a safe and exemplary bicyclist.•    A flexible schedule, specifically a willingness to work evenings and weekends.•    The ability to organize time wisely and multi-task in a relaxed, fun environment.
